The bridgeport learning center parent group, headed by psychologist dr. rita brown holloway and teacher deirdre mckinnon, is a monthly meeting at the school where parents come together and learn about different strategies and techniques to use with their children. it is also a great way for parents to get together and learn about each other as well as share experiences they have with their children. it builds a sense of community with parent and school, which is vital in the success of any student.

october 2, 2013: increasing important home school connections top 20 home connections that increase school achievement: 1. visit the school regularly, especially PARENT GRoups!! 2. keep the teachers informed of anything unusual that has happened at home that might affect their child's behavior andperformance in the classroom. 3. talk about education and learning postively. 4. attend school functions with your child. 5. develop an afterschool HOME schedule thay includes: a. time to talk about school b. time to have fun together c. time to do homework 6. provide a well-organized work space for your child at home. 7. provide opportunities for children to practice and extend their learning. 8. develop work habits necessary to be successful in school. 9. read to and with your child often!! 10. know and communicate your child's strengths and areas of interest to teachers. 11. ask how and when it is best to contact teachers with your questions and concerns. 12. ask questions whenever you don't understand any of the work your child is assigned. 13. visit the library regularly to supplement topics being taught in the classroom. 14. request information you would like with enough reasonable lead time so educators have time to gather it. 15. ask educators what information you could gather that would be helpful in making decisions about your child. 16. come to meetings organized and well-prepared;bring written notes and a list of questions. 17. share resources you have found helpful (articles, books) with school personnel. 18. be honest about your child with school personnel; share his or her strengths, weaknesses, and affinities, as well as your hopes and dreams. 19. be a professional parent-be reasonable. be respectful. 20. please ask us about specific things you can do at home to support what is going on in school.
